Story = The most powerful communications tool. A simple way to convey intention, meaning, information and emotion.
Late last year I pitched an idea to George Hook for a regular item for his Newstalk show High Noon. It would be entitled: “Breakthrough media moments that shaped the world.”
The idea was to tell a different story each week about an amazing media moment that shaped the world. George love the idea and he wanted to meet – that’s when it got really interesting.
In my mind I had thought it would play out with me coming into studio once a week and talking to George about each story. He had a completely different idea. Over breakfast one morning he shared his lifelong passion for radio, his love for early BCC broadcasters like Jimmy Young, Eamon Andrews, and the amazing Alastair Cook’s letter from America. He wanted the idea to be a weekly story, documentary style – complete with sound clips.
We agreed I would produce a pilot episode, and I went off to invest myself fully in mastering the art of storytelling. The pilot episode – how the crashing landing of a plane on the Hudson saw Twitter scoop the news – was a huge success and the series was commissioned.
Since then I’ve been telling a different story – once week. From the sublime to the bizarre – Tiger woods driving into a hydrant to Padraig Flynn’s implosion on the Late Late Show.
At All Good Tales each story teaches us a little bit more about the craft of how to tell a great story. In the last few weeks we’ve also received many requests from brands, organisations, and businesses about how they can place stories at the heart of what they’re doing.
It doesn’t matter if you’re delivering a speech, announcing new jobs, seeking investors, or launching a new product or service – telling a story is always the best ways to connect with your audience.
So why then do most organisations write horrible press releases, unreadable technical articles, and mind numbing reports? Because they haven’t be awakened to the true power of stories.
So we have created a new course to share what we’ve learned about how to make and shape great stories at the heart of your organisation.
