16th September 2019Ever since 2016, Lidl have been the biggest corporate supporter of women’s sport in Ireland, investing €4 million into Ladies’ Gaelic Football. From 2011 to 2015 Tesco held the sponsorship for four years, an endorsement which largely went unnoticed. Lidl wanted to avoid their rival’s fate and put this sponsorship to good use by using it to build their brand story. Within a year of this campaign, they had generated an awareness of their sponsorship that was higher than that of AIB with Gaelic Football and Heineken with Irish rugby. We at All Good Tales, have compiled a list of three reasons why Lidl’s campaign with Ladies Gaelic Football was a success. They weren’t condescending to women Many marketing campaigns aimed at women have been incredibly condescending, cosmetic and simplistic. For example, in 2012, BIC (the pen company) launched a “For Her” pen. Costing twice as much as their regular products, the only change was that they came in pink. Ridiculed by comedians such as Ellen DeGeneres, it became the benchmark for terrible marketing campaigns aimed at women. Seeking to remind their customers of these campaigns, Lidl created a spoof product called “Ladyball”. It was advertised as being built for “a woman’s grip”, a woman’s ability and fashion-driven for a woman’s style. To top it off, it was painted a bright, blinding pink. The product’s launch video generated huge amounts of negative feedback online, which was exactly Lidl’s intention. After the dust of outrage had settled, they revealed that it was a marketing stunt, and revealed their brand new campaign working alongside the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA). It completely changed their brand perception When Lidl opened their first store in Ireland in 2000, they were seen as a multi-national megacorporation who offered discount shopping with no frills. It was a stark contrast to the neighbourly supermarket culture which had been so successfully cultivated by Superquinn’s Feargal Quinn in the 80s and 90s. After the 2008 financial crisis, Lidl’s market share grew significantly, but they failed to shake that image of the “German food warehouse”. One of Lidl’s goals with this campaign was to get more people to associate their brand with local activity, by using the links that local LGFA clubs have with their communities. Their aim was to double people’s perception of Lidl as a local supermarket, and according to Spark Research, they tripled their original number. This was done by focusing much of their funding on local institutions. For example, they bought €250,000 worth of equipment for 147 schools, rejuvenating the sport amongst young girls. Not only did it help Lidl, it helped the sport Often with PR campaigns, they only have soundbites and vague statements to back up the impact that their marketing campaigns have had. However, when it comes to Lidl’s partnership with the LGFA, there is one set of statistics which seem to back up the success of their campaign. In 2016, the year Lidl’s partnership began, attendance at the LGFA All-Ireland final was 34,445. Two years later, attendance was 50,141. They keep histories alive and teach us all lessons from what has gone before us. In this series, we explore the importance of traditional storytelling across various cultures. Icelandic culture The small island nation of Iceland, stands out with a highly dynamic and cultural artistic scene centring around the Icelanders’ centuries-old love for storytelling. With a history of more than a thousand years and a culture so separated from other countries, it is unsurprising that Iceland is so ripe with legends, tales and storytellers. Some say reading is a national sport in Iceland, others describe it as a spiritual experience. Classifications of this kind clearly show that reading in Iceland is a way of living, a necessity without which everyday life would be inconceivable. Iceland ranks among the leading nations based on the number of writers and books published per capita. The Icelanders like to express their values, impressions and views through written form. Storytelling has occupied a central place in Icelandic history and culture since the first settlers from Norway and the British Isles reached the island in the late ninth and early tenth century. Soon after, the first writers appeared, producing literature on calf skin. In the eleventh century there were professional sagamen, who recited the sagas—oral histories and tales. Iceland’s Golden Age Described as Iceland’s Golden Age, the thirteenth century saw the appearance of some of the best-known Icelandic Sagas, which are now a major source of knowledge about Scandinavian mythology and history. The Sagas, an extensive series of tales of hardship and heroism are the epitome of Icelandic culture. The Icelandic Sagas, especially those of the Vikings from the tenth century and Snorri Sturluson’s Sagas from the thirteenth century, belong to the most remarkable cultural treasures in world history. They are a record of historic events that have a huge influence over modern Icelandic language and society. The harsh climate and long periods of darkness in the winter contributed to the development of Icelandic literature. Under such unfavourable conditions, storytelling and reading became a favourite pastime through which the Icelanders, children in particular, could simultaneously entertain and educate themselves. Picture Icelanders living in turf longhouses sitting around smoky fire pits sharing stories and reading aloud to one another. Ancient myths, heroic quests, tragedies, comedies and lessons in life were all depicted in their traditional stories to keep spirits high. Children usually mastered reading and writing and had their first lessons in history and geography by reading, telling and retelling the Sagas. This explains to a large degree how the Icelanders achieved relatively high literacy rates despite the widespread poverty in those days. The Icelanders also appear to have had the habit of keeping journals and diaries in which they marked events and impressions of their surroundings. Icelandic is only spoken in Iceland and people feel passionately about protecting and preserving their native tongue. To do so, it must be used to its fullest through poetry, songwriting, novels and storytelling. With so many isolated villages dotting the rugged coastline, books and journals made their way from settlement to settlement. This helped to keep the Icelandic language alive and well. Stories in Iceland are where history, mythology and nature come together. Icelanders have always told fantastic tales of their strange encounters with the many peculiar supernatural beings with which they share the land. During the long dark winter nights, storytelling was the chief form of entertainment with each region fostering its very own bulk of tales and legends that were passed down from generation to generation throughout the centuries. From the extraordinary Lyngbakur—a fishermen-eating giant whale that disguises himself as an island—to the trolls of day and night, Icelandic folklore is riddled with countless tales of fantastic spirits that reflect the unique natural landscapes in which they reside. But these peculiar accounts of mystical creatures were not mere instruments of pastime activity, they reflect the harsh natural environment in Icelander’s struggled to survive. They served as educational tools that taught their children how to live in an unforgiving wilderness while nurturing in them a sense of things too subtle for the human eye to register. The stories of antiquity are allegorical accounts that teach their audience to respect both the spirits of the land, and the natural environment in which they reside, where earthquakes, volcanoes and extreme weather conditions constantly pose a very real and tangible threat. 10th June 2019Our Passionate about Stories series looks at storytelling from organisations of all shapes and sizes. The series gives us an opportunity to learn from brands we love and develop our storytelling skills. When it comes to advertising, Maltesers and their parent company Mars, are passionate about telling great stories. They're also passionate about making sure all of their audience is represented. Representing disability in mainstream advertising has become one of their core storytelling missions. Their story Mars, the parent company of Maltesers, has been a family-owned company for over 100 years. They produce and sell a selection of well-known confectionary, food products and pet care products around the world. Some of their best-known brands include Dolmio, Pedigree and Wrigley's chewing gum. A customer favourite of their products is Maltesers. Created in England in 1936, the chocolate balls were first sold in 1937. A firm favourite, the lighter way to enjoy chocolate has been consistently popular. Look at the light side of disability Throughout the years Maltesers has always had eye-catching and story focused advertising. Their campaigns have often become talking points, many people will remember trying to pick up Maltesers with straws, an idea which came from one of their tv ads. In 2016 Maltesers decided to take a different approach to their advertising. After discovering the fact that 80% of disabled people feel underrepresented by TV and the media, the brand set out to include more people with disabilities in their advertisements. The Channel 4 competition, 'Superhumans Wanted' inspired this initiative. This offered brands and advertisers the chance to win £1m of airtime to develop a creative idea that puts disability and diversity at the heart of the campaign. Working with the creative agency AMV BBDO they came up with a series of three ads. Real life stories from disabled people were the inspiration for the commercials. The ads celebrated universally awkward situations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgUqmKQ9Lrg The message behind this idea was to show that humourous situations can break down barriers and be a force for change. Advertisements can easily and seamlessly include disabled people, the Maltesers ads showed this. The reaction to the ads was overwhelmingly positive, showing the benefit to being more inclusive. Following the campaign Mars’ vice-president of marketing Michele Oliver urged brands to think differently about diversity by not seeing it as an afterthought. Sales rose by 8.1% and the commercials continue to be a resounding success for the brand.
