In the age of new media, Youtube has become one of the biggest storytelling tools.
Big name brands, small companies, celebrities and regular Joe Soaps are using the platform to create engaging, creative and thought-provoking content.
One of the most high-profile users of Youtube is Casey Neistat.
Having steadily worked his way up the Youtube world and built his following Casey now has over 92 million subscribers on the platform. His videos have been growing in success, today his page boasts over 2.1 billion views.
One of Casey’s specialties and a Youtube favourite he has perfected is the vlog. Currently, his channel is made up predominantly of vlogs documenting his day-to-day life, family events, travels around the globe and much more.
Casey has turned the vlog into a speciality and something which people closely associate with him. His success in this comes from the techniques he uses but also his storytelling skill.
Casey is passionate about storytelling and believes it is the storyteller who makes a great story. He believes that if the person telling the story is invested in the subject matter it will always make for a good story. A storyteller’s passion for a story can transform a mundane and dull beginning, middle and end into a vibrant tale worth listening to.
In his videos, Casey recognises that all elements of his story are important. His title, thumbnail, music choice and even down to his camera angles are important in telling his story.
He also recognises he is bringing his audience on a journey with him. His stories and vlogs are not a peek into his life, but instead are an adventure. One which the audience has the ability to be part of. This allows Casey to be engaging, one of the most vital components of any storyteller.
Casey travels the world speaking about his YouTube channel and how he uses storytelling in what he does. This week he is speaking at the Dublin Tech Summit. You can check out his YouTube channel here.
