‘Hostage’ by Guy Delisle.
‘Hostage’ is a graphic novel by well-known Canadian cartoonist Guy Delisle.
Published in 2017 this graphic novel has received widespread acclaim for its storytelling style and subject.
The story wants its readers to consider the question “How does one survive when all hope is lost?”.
It follows the story of Christophe André, an administrator with Doctors Without Borders, who on a night in the middle of 1997 was kidnapped by armed men. For three months André was kept in an unknown destination between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. He was held in solitary confinement and handcuffed with no content with the outside world and little to survive on.
This novel is a recount of this time by Guy Delisle. The novel is a testament to the power of André’s determination in the face of hopelessness.
The imagery used in the novel depicts the tone of the story, with muted colours used throughout.
Thoughtful, intense, and moving, ‘Hostage’ looks at what drives our will to survive in the darkest of moments.
