There is an eclectic mix of graphic novels in our Story Studio space. They are a talking point for course attendees who want to find out more about them. The team also regularly takes one they’ve spotted home to enjoy.

Every few weeks we’ll be focusing in on one of the novels from our Story Studio. You can catch the latest instalment which looked at ‘In Search of Lost Time: Swann’s Way: A Graphic Novel’ by Stéphane Heuet and Arthur Goldhammer. here.

‘Sleepwalk and Other Stories’ by Adrian Tomine.

Sleepwalk

‘Sleepwalk and Other Stories‘ is a collection of comic series ‘Optic Nerve’ by critically acclaimed author Adrian Tomine.

The novel delves deep into sixteen separate stories, offering readers haunting tales of modern life.

On the surface, the characters seem to be well-adjusted but we are gradually taken deeper. Tomine takes us deeper into their lives, examining their struggle to connect with friends and lovers.

The novel was published in 1998. This was at the beginning of Adrian Tomine’s remarkable career.

Inside our Story Studio–In Search of Lost Time: Swann’s Way: A Graphic Novel

Our Story Studio is our creative space. It’s where we hold all of our meetings, hold events, workshops and where we go to to get our creative juices flowing.

Graphic novels line the wall of the Story Studio. The decorative covers and stories included are calling to be read.

‘In Search of Lost Time: Swann’s Way: A Graphic Novel‘ by Stéphane Heuet and Arthur Goldhammer.

In search of lost time

This is a graphic adaptation, by French illustrator Stéphane Heuet, of ‘In Search of Lost Time’ by Marcel Proust. Translated from French by Arthur Goldhammer, the novel acts as the perfect introduction to Proust’s masterpiece. It also acts as a companion to the original novel.

In this novel, the narrator Marcel, an aspiring writer, recalls his childhood and memories about his family’s country home in the town of Combray.

Here, Heuet uses Proust’s own famously rich sentences and observations to portray Combray. The work and language of Proust act as blueprints for Heuet’s illustrations.

It is clear from looking at this beautiful novel that Heuet is a lover of Proust and Goldhammer stating that in their work they “tried to preserve the ‘flavour’ of Proust.”

‘The Complete Maus’ by Art Spiegelman.

Maus

‘The Complete Maus‘ is a graphic novel by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman, serialized from 1980 to 1991.

The graphic novel tells a real-life story. Critics have classified Maus as a memoir, biography, history, fiction, autobiography, or a mix of genres. It depicts Spiegelman interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor.

In his work, Spiegelman addresses the horror of the Holocaust through cartoons. Through doing this he is able to capture the everyday reality of fear and is able to explore the guilt, relief and extraordinary sensation of survival.

The story also reveals how the children of survivors are in their own way affected by the trials of their parents.

The novel has bee called a contemporary classic and in 1992, it became the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize.
